3 Signs That Your AC Is in Dire Need of Repair

Air conditioners don’t last forever. A car with 200,000 miles on it doesn’t drive like a brand new one, that’s just the way the world works. Though, with good air conditioning repair in Plano, TX, you can keep yours running for a decade or more! So you can go through your life being constantly disappointed by your failing AC, or you can be prepared for the next difficult decision to make. If you’re the latter kind of person, then perhaps the list below can help you notice when your air conditioner is having problems.

AC problems that go unaddressed can quickly compile and cause catastrophic damage. A small refrigerant leak can lead to your compressor working too hard, and eventually the failure of your system. If you’d rather not spend the money for a replacement when your current AC will do just fine, then take a gander at these clues your AC might be giving you.

Noticing the Signs

Obviously, if you hear any unusual noises coming from your AC, or if it’s just not doing its job- it doesn’t really matter what the problem is, you should contact a professional technician. That being said, let’s get into some well-known signs that an AC could be in disrepair.

  • Efficiency. This is a big one. If your air conditioner just doesn’t give you the same cooling power it used to, while you’re paying increased costs for energy- there could be a multitude of issues wrong with it. No, you’re not just getting pickier or more used to the heat. An air conditioner should keep you cool and happy no matter the temperature outside. Pay close attention to your energy bills and don’t hesitate to compare them to last year’s.
  • Noises. If you’re hearing a bubbling or a hissing noise, that’s not a normal AC noise. That most likely means you’ve got a refrigerant leak which could be an expensive repair to fix and will inevitably lead to the breakdown of your AC system. Clanging or moaning noises should be addressed as well since there could be a loose part, screw, or fan that is grinding something it shouldn’t. The longer these noises go on, the more expensive this problem will be to fix.
  • Age. This is a big one to consider when you take into account the other issues with your AC. If your AC is running noisily or less efficiently, repairs might be able to do the job- but air conditioners are only supposed to last 10-15 years. The longer beyond that they function, the more repairs you’re going to need.

What to Do

If your AC is making a noise or running less efficiently, and you only got it a couple of years ago, then go ahead and schedule those repairs. However, if your 20-year-old AC is acting up again, those problems will only get worse and worse. Take refrigerant leaks for example, old R-22 recharges will get more and more expensive as time goes on, whereas a new AC could save you that money in the long run. Ultimately the choice is yours.
