How Often Should I Change the Filter in My System?

Your HVAC system’s air filter functions to block allergens from reentering your home’s air. Over time, the filters can get clogged, decreasing the efficiency of your system.

To ensure your system is functioning correctly, you should change the filter as follows:

·1” filters – every 1 to 2 months

·2” filters – every 4 months

·4” filters – every 6 to 8 months

·Electronic Air Cleaner (EAC) – every 3 months

Do I Need to Have My Air Ducts Cleaned?

If you or members of your family are experiencing illness, or if you notice the air ducts are filled with a considerable amount of debris, consider having them cleaned. Having your air ducts cleaned can improve your family’s health and can increase the efficiency of your system.

What Is in the Air that I Breathe in My Home?

The air inside your home is filled with pollutants just like the air outside.

The most common pollutants found inside your home include:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Particles from household cleaners
  • Mold spores
  • Pet dander

The particles flying around your home not only degrade your indoor air quality, but can also cause you or your family members to get sick. The good news is that various products are available to improve your home’s air quality. A knowledgeable HVAC technician can discuss the different air quality products with you to help determine which is best for your home.

Why Is the Display on My Thermostat Blank?

You depend on your thermostat to control the temperature in your home and maintain a certain level of comfort. It can be frustrating if your thermostat is blank.

If you are having issues with your thermostat:

  • Change the batteries. Batteries should be changed at least once a year.
  • Check the circuit breaker. If a circuit breaker was tripped, your thermostat could have lost power.
  • Check the safety switch. When there is a problem with your system, such as excessive heat or a buildup of condensation, the safety switch may get triggered. When this happens, the thermostat will turn off. You should have your system inspected if the safety switch was triggered.
  • Replace the thermostat. Over time, your thermostat will fail. If you have checked all other possible causes of a blank thermostat display, contact an HVAC professional to have the device replaced.

What Is a Unit’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio?

The seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) is how a central air conditioner’s efficiency is rated. Air conditioners with higher SEERs are more efficient. If you have an older air conditioner with a low SEER, you might want to upgrade to a more efficient model.

How Often Should I Add Freon to My System?

Your AC system is filled with enough Freon to last the duration of its life; it does not get depleted, so you should never have to add Freon to your system. If you are having issues with your AC, such as warm air coming from vents or low air output, you should contact an experienced HVAC technician to check your system for leaks.

How Does the R-22 Phase-Out Affect Me?

R-22 is the refrigerant used in air conditioning systems. The substance, which is commonly referred to as Freon, is considered harmful to the ozone and will be phased out by January 2020, which means it will no longer be produced or imported. You do not have to replace your system, but if your AC uses Freon, repairs that require the substance to be added to your unit can only be conducted using recycled Freon.

When Does My System Need to Be Replaced?

If you have an older system, generally more than 10 years old, you may want to consider upgrading to a more energy-efficient system. An upgrade can save you money on energy bills and costly repairs in the future.

Could My System Be Causing My High Energy Bill?

Your heating and cooling system contributes to about 50% of your energy bill. If you have an older system or your system has not been properly maintained, your energy bill could be a lot higher than you expect. Make sure you have a qualified HVAC technician inspect your system and fix any issues so it is working at its peak performance. You might also consider upgrading to a more energy efficient model to keep energy costs down. Installing a home automation system that regulates temperature when you are away is also an option that can help lower your utility bill.

What Can Be Done About Hot and Cold Spots in My House?

A few factors can cause hot and cold spots in your home:

  • Improper unit size for your home
  • Poor ductwork insulation
  • Poor attic insulation

If you are experiencing hot and cold spots, an HVAC technician can check your system and insulation in your home to determine why the temperature varies.
